A 35th Year to Remember

Metcalfe Golf opened in 1976 as a 9 hole golf course, today we have 27 holes, a fully licensed restaurant (Hickories) and a 120 person capacity tent. We have come a long way in 35 years and it is only fitting that our 35th year was one to remember. With the course now closed for 2011 here are 10 of our favorite memories from this past season (in no particular order):

10. The 11th annual Metcalfe Charity Classic raises $7500.00 for the Osgoode Care Center.

9. The Metcalfe Men beat the host club by one point at Hammond Golf Club to finish second at OVGA Intersectionals. They will host in 2012

8. The Metcalfe Women, having moved up a division mafter winning in 2010, headed to the Upper Ottawa Valley where they finsihed 2nd at Perth Golf and Country Club in the women's OVGA Intersectionals. They will host in 2012

7. In the first ever OVGA Senior Ladies Intersectionals the Metcalfe senior women finish 3rd.

6. The Metcalfe senior men took a strong team to Emerald Links and finished 2nd in the senior men's OVGA Intersectionals. They will host in 2012

5. Golf in November! After a less than perfect spring season mother nature smiles on the Ottawa region proving us with a great summer and fall, with the course remianing open into November.

4. Eastern Ontario/Ottawa valley golfers give Metcalfe golf the nod, voting us into the top 5 in two categories of the 2011 Flagstick Golf Magazine Reader's Choice Awards, Best Public Course Under $45 (4th) and Best Overall Service (3rd). Thank you to everyone who voted for us.

3. With a year of social media under our belt Metcalfe Golf launches 3 successful social media contests for the 2011 season, the Facebook photo contest, the Tweet Time of the day, and the Metcalfe Golf story contest. We have some new contests up our sleeve for 2012.

2. In August the annual Metcalfe Golf Club Championships saw new member Willie Walker take the Men's A flight and former women's club captain Chris Quaile win the Women's A flight. Complete results can be found here

Social Media Contests are Coming to an End for 2011

What a run is has been, technically, the run is till going. Without a doubt we have had a great fall golf season, so good that the fall season hasn't felt like fall at all. On Thanksgiving weekend people were playing in shorts and t-shirts and temperatures hit the 30s when you took humidity into account. But, like it or not, at some point, maybe not tomorrow, maybe not next week, but some time soon, the temperatures are going to drop, the snow is going to fly, and golf season will be over.

While golf season will hopefully continue for another month or more, the time is right to lay the ground work for the wrap up our successful 2011 social media campaign. If you will remember back in the spring we launched 3 social media contests aimed at engaging our members and public players alike and we think it worked! In addition to our contests we have maintained our blog for a second year in a row and we updated our website in September (www.metcalfegolf.com).

As for our 3 contests, here is what you can expect over the next month:

Facebook Photo Contest - The Facebook contest has accepted our last entries for the season. After the winning photo for October is selected we will re-post all of the monthly winners and let you, our Facebook friends decide who will be the season long winner and win the big prize! Most Facebook likes during the month of November takes home the prize. If you recall from the spring, the prize for the season winner was to be a Callaway MX Pro golf GPS. Unfortunately, if you haven't already heard, the MX Pro has been recalled by Callaway, so we can't give it out as a prize. We are currently working with Callaway Golf to come up with an equally good prize for the winner.

My Metcalfe Golf Experience Contest - This contest started out hot, but fizzled a little during the end of the summer. The grand prize winner will be selected via a random draw on November 1st. The winner will receive a Hickories Restaurant Dinner Experience.

Tweet Times - Tweet times will continue to be posted on twitter for Saturdays and Sundays until the end of the season. Keep watching twitter to get this great deal (golf and cart for $21 when you have a foursome).

A look at the Metcalfe Golf Junior Program

Metcalfe Golf Staff and Guest Blogger Maddie James, shares with us some information about the Metcalfe Golf Junior Program.

Every Golfer has to start off somewhere. Whether that person is Tiger Woods, Rory Mcilroy or your golf buddy you call every Saturday to hit the links. All these people decided one day to pick up a club and try to hit a tiny ball in the right direction.

At Metcalfe, we are known for our family atmosphere and strive to be welcoming to all levels of golfer. Working in the pro shop I see at least one newcomer to the game of golf every couple of days. Whether your fifty or fifteen golf offers the same challenges and same rewards for all who play.

As someone who played their first game of golf at Metcalfe Golf and was later a junior member for a number of years I have been lucky enough to be able to run the Junior League the past two years.. The stream of 60 youngsters that arrive every Wednesday in the summer to play 9 or 18 holes is enough to make any golfer on the course that day look over and enquire about the junior league. My first response to anyone who asks about the league is that the first goal we set for the kids is to have fun. With a range of ages from 10 to 16 years old the junior league is a mix of newcomers and experienced young golfers. It was designed as a way to give kids an opportunity in the Summer from late June to late August to golf with others their own age. The program has both an 18 hole league and a 9 hole league. The18 hole league is for those golfers that have some experience in golf already and want to improve their game. The 9hole league is for those that are new to the game and are just learning the basic rules and skills of golf. The entry fee for the program is $75.00 which includes an opening BBQ and shot gun tournament, a hat, a shirt and the closing BBQ and tournament. The program also has two junior clinics with a golf professional. Arriving around 9 or 10 am the kids quickly check in with the golf shop to pay their weekly league fee and then grab a pull cart (where the stock of 70 is quickly being depleted by the juniors) and head to the practice green for a friendly putting or chipping competition. Once the competition is over the kids all crowd around the tee box to watch as every foursome tees off on the first hole.

One of the memories that sticks with me from my first year as a junior coordinator is on my first day working I met a young boy who was out to golf for the very first time. Being both newbies I stuck around him for the day. When it was his turn to hit he got up to the tee box, got his ball in position and swung at least 8 times (mere practice shots I told him) and never hit the ball. With his ninth attempt he kept his eyes focused on the ground and finally made contact. The ball lobed up from the tee box and met the ground not more than five feet from where he had been standing. He looked over with an anxious face for some sort of approval. I remembered what my dad had said to me every time I had a hit a shot I was not happy about. “It’s playable” he would say. So I looked at this young golfer on the tee and repeated the same words I had been told. He gave me a big smile, nodded and proceeded on with the hole. It is the sense of tradition about golf and passing on old techniques to new players that makes golf the sport it is.

After the game the juniors eat lunch and await their parents arrival to pick them up at about 3:30. Once the kids are gone for another fun day all that’s left for the staff to do is track down the 60 scattered pull carts left behind and move them back into a line waiting for the next Wednesday when we do it all over again.

The strength of the program lies in its ability to introduce kids in a fun and safe manner to the game of golf. From their beginnings in the 9 hole program, there have been many young golfers who have transitioned to the 18 hole program and have become junior members at Metcalfe. Some even start to play in local junior tournaments.

Just this week I took 10 junior members to compete in the Junior Intersectional golf tournament at Kanata Golf and Country Club. This was an opportunity for our Juniors to represent Metcalfe Golf and compete against some of the best junior players in the region. When I looked at the team I had with me, all of them at one point or another had been in the Junior League. Here are kids who had some of their first starts at Metcalfe Golf who were now playing in tournaments and competing against other juniors from a number of different courses. After the 1^st tournament we are in second place and we are heading to the Canadian Golf and Country next week hoping to play well. Who knows, maybe we can finish 1^st.

Only time will tell, but maybe one of our juniors will one day put on the Green jacket. At the very least I know that we have played a part in providing them with an opportunity to learn a game that they can enjoy for the rest of their lives, and hopefully pass on to their children and grandchildren in the future.. An opportunity that started during the Junior League when they hit their very first shot on a nice summer’s day at Metcalfe Golf and Country Club.

Senior Ladies and Men's Intersectional Teams Named

After a couple of weeks of try-outs the men's and women's Metcalfe Golf senior intersectional teams have been named.

The competition was fierce for our 2011 senior men’s and ladies’ intersectional teams with playoffs needed to decide the last spots on both teams.

The men’s team consists of Fred Guy, Doug Hawley, Wayne Bourbeau, Bill Carisse, Willy Walker, Gerry Chartrand, Sonny Lapointe & Phil Lockett. Henry Lecompte, John Poggione & Mike Weiss will play off for the two alternate spots. The men’s team competes on September 6th at Emerald Links.

The ladies who qualified are Rose Poggione, Marg Guy, Pam Brown, Chris Rennie, Wendy Lecompte, Carol Vost & Heather Lockett. A playoff between Pat Clark, Edie Leclair and Alveta Goguen will be held for the alternate position. The ladies team competes on September 17th at the Canadian.

I can confirm that the men's alternates are Mike Weiss & John Poggione and the women's alternate is Pat Clark.

Men's and Women's OVGA Intersectional Results

Last Sunday and Monday was the annual Ottawa Valley Golf Association (OVGA) Intersectionals presented by Flagstick Golf Magazine and the Metcalfe Men's and Women's Teams did us proud by each finishing 2nd at their respective events.

On Sunday, the Metcalfe men travelled to Hammond where they competed in Division I against Haute Plaines, Copperdale and the host club Hammond. It was a good day on the links for the men, with all player's taking points except 1. Haute Plaines proved to be too much for the other 3 clubs running away with 1st, however second place was a hard fought battle between Hammond and Metcalfe and it came down to the last match until it was decided. In the end our Metcalfe men finished in second place with 29 points, while Hammond was 3rd with 28 points. The 2nd place finish means the men will host division I in 2012. On Monday, the women continued in Calabogie what the men started in Hammond, with solid play and a second place finish. Unlike the men's event the day before all 4 clubs were very close with the Metcalfe women finishing only 6 points out of 1st and 2 points up on the 3rd place team. In the end the host club Calabogie was 1st, Metcalfe 2nd, Perth 3rd and Glen Mar 4th. As with the men, their 2nd place finish means the women will be hosting division H in 2012. Callaway Upro MX Golf GPS Demo Available

As a Callaway golf dealer we often get the opportunity to offer our customers the chance to demo new Callaway golf clubs, such as the Callaway Octane Diablo drivers we currently have available for demo.

We are now excited to let everyone know that in addition to the Octane driver, and other Callaway clubs we have available for demo, we now have a demo Callaway upro mx golf GPS waiting and ready to be taken out onto the course.

The upro is an accurate, stylish, and most importantly simple to use golf GPS that gives you yardages to the front, middle and back of the green. Having taken the demo out on the 18 hole course I can attest to the ease of use and accuracy. With a touch of a button I was able to get the yardages I was looking for. The battery easily lasted the entire round, the unit is small enough to fit right into your pants pocket, or handle storage compartment of your push cart.

Having played my fair share of rounds at Metcalfe in the past 4 years I know the yardages pretty well from just about anywhere on the course and I know how far I hit my clubs. The upro gave me accurate readings from the fairway, and for those times I ended up on the path less traveled the upro provided me with the information required to make an informed club selection.

Once you purchase your upro you will have the ability to register it with Callaway golf and also download additional features here: http://callawayuxplore.com/. As of June 17, the site is down for upgrading, but should be back soon.

On the technical side, there are 3 Mode's available with the urpo;

1. BasicMode - provides distance from you to front, middle, and back of green. BasicMode is installed and ready to use out of the box.

2. GoMode - provides distance from you to front, middle, and back of green, plus detailed yardages for hazards around the green (such as water or bunkers). Also, in GoMode you can "place" the pin on the green and get accurate yardages from you to the pin.GoMode is installed and ready to use out of the box.

3. ProMode - not yet available for download, but coming soon. Will provide distance from you to any spot on the hole, works by displaying a detailed aerial image where you can pick any spot on the image and get a distance from you to that spot. ProMode may have a fee associated with it and you will have to download it from the site after you purchase your upro.

The upro has an advantage over many of its competitors in that you don't need to download any courses as it has over 25,000 pre-loaded courses. Also, there are no annual fees required to activate the upro (except maybe for ProMode).

So next time you are at the course ask to demo the Callaway upro mx and the staff will be happy to set you up. The fee to demo a club, or the Callaway upro mx is $5.

2011 Metcalfe Golf OVGA Intersectional Teams

The Metcalfe Golf men's and women's 2011 OVGA intersectional teams are now set. After a grueling two weeks of competition 12 men and 8 women are set to represent Metcalfe Golf and Country Club at the annual intersectional events.

The women are coming into the 2011 event on a high having won the I division in 2010 as the hosts. They will be moving up to division H, where they will head to Highlands Calabogie Golf Resort where they will face off against the host club, plus Perth Golf Course and Glen Mar Golf and Country Club. The women's team will consist of (in alphabetical order):

We are getting a lot of calls about our tweet time promotion going on this summer, but a lot of people are still a little confused on how it works. So, here is the low down

As part of our 35 Anniversary we are offering 1 tee time per day at 1976 prices. That is $6 for 18 holes! The small print is that carts (at 2011 pricing) are mandatory and you must pay for a foursome.

When you put all of this together the price of that Tweet Time of the day is $84.00. Or, $21 per golfer in a foursome, $28 per golfer in a threesome and $42 per golfer in a twosome.

You may ask yourself, how good of a deal is this really?Well, that will depend on the time of day and how many golfers are in your group. Let's look at some of the options

1. Prime Time Weekday

At Metcalfe prime time is defined as between 7am - 2pm. The cost of 18 holes with half a cart between 7am and 2pm Monday - Friday is $52.00. For a foursome that would be $208.00. The tweet time of the day at $84.00 is $124.00 in savings!

If you only have a threesome, the normal price would be $156.00, The tweet time of the day at $84.00 is $72.00 in savings!

If you only have twosome, the normal price would be $104.00, The tweet time of the day at $84.00 is $20.00 in savings!

2. Prime Time Weekend

We will now be releasing our Tweet Time 2 days in advance. For example on Tuesday (today) at 3pm we will post on twitter (@metcalfegolf) the Tweet Time for Thursday (and Wednesday due to the overlap). All you have to do is call the golf shop with the correct tee time and tell them that you would like the Tweet Time of the Day. The Tweet Time of the day consists of 4 green fees at 1976 pricing & 2 carts at today's pricing. That's $84 for a foursome with 2 carts! That works out to $21.00 per player for 18 holes and cart. This is the best deal Metcalfe is offering this season and it runs 7 days a week!

35th Season Underway

Our 35th season is underway. We have now been officially open for 1 week and it feels great to see the course drying and greening up. All 18 holes are open with no temporary greens or tees, we even have carts out, but it is cart paths only.

The 18 hole course has come through the winter in better than expected shape, with the greens in late spring early summer condition. There are still some brown spots on the tee decks and fairways, but they are filling in nicely and with a little warmth will be all but gone in the coming weeks. The course is however, still pretty wet, hence why it has been cart path only for the last week.

The 9 hole course has come through the winter in a little worse shape than the 18 hole course and it still really wet. With that said, the greens are in better than expected shape with winter damage on less than 10%. The greens are also a little longer/slower than normal as the grounds crew lets the damaged spots heal.

Ronnie's Recipe - Smoky Hot BBQ Sauce

Throughout the 2011 season we will be bringing you a selection of Chef Ronnie's recipes that are featured on our menu at Hickories and now available for you to try out at home.

HEAT UP YOUR BBQ WITH OUR

"SMOKY HOT BBQ SAUCE"!!!

INGREDIENTS: YIELD ABOUT 2 CUPS

1 cup brown sugar

1/2 cup CHIPOLTE PEPPER IN ADOBO SAUCE (this can be bought in speciality store)

1/2 cup dark spiced rum (good quality)

1/4 cup soy sauce

1/4 cup ketchup

1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce

1 large cloves garlic, crushed

1 teaspoon ground dry mustard

ground black pepper to taste

Directions:

In a saucepan over low heat, mix the brown sugar, chile sauce, rum, soy sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, dry mustard, and pepper. Simmer 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Cool, and refrigerate until ready to use.

Course Update #3 - Opening Date Official

After a bit of flip flopping due to the weather, our opening date is now official!

Members

We will open the 18 hole course to members (both 9 and 18 hole members may play) on Tuesday April 19th at 12pm. Tee times for Tuesday the 19th may be booked now by calling the golf shop.

We have extended the early payment discount of 3% until Tuesday April 19^th. The locker rooms and club storage are now available if you would like to bring anything out.

General Public

We will officially open the course on Wednesday April 20th. You may book tee times for Wednesday online or by calling the course.

Restaurant

Tuesday April 19th will be opening day for the restaurant. We will have soup and sandwiches available from 11am – 2pm and the bar will be open until 6pm.

Course Update #2 - Opening Day Could be Sooner Than Expected

Staff was out on the course yesterday and it looks like there is the potential for the course to be opening sooner than expected. Although a cold spring, the greens have hung in pretty well. If we get some warm rain this weekend it will help draw the frost out of the ground and green everything up.

The target date for opening has been moved forward to April 14th, from April 21st. This will be made official after one last course inspection on Monday morning the 11th. In celebration of our 35th anniversary, and in line with our My Metcalfe Golf Experience Contest, we thought it would be fun to ask some of the staff about their favorite Metcalfe Golf Experiences. Getting us started is pro shop staff member Dave Lahey.

My recollections of Metcalfe Golf and Country Club go back to the early years when the course was 11 holes, sand traps were filled with lumps of clay, rough was very rough and fairways were not much better. Late in the evening on weekends one could also be shadowed by the elder Mr. Welch ensuring that the game was played with integrity and not with an illegal beverage.

Why did I continue to return? Simple, the staff, golfers and the ongoing changes that have been made to the course. Over the years owners and management have initiated changes that show their willingness to enhance and improve the facility.

I have always been amazed by the friendly, courteous attitudes offered by the staff who drive the grass cutters, serve in Hickories restaurant, work in the Golf Shop and manage the course.

Although not the greatest golfer in the world, over the past 35 years I have frequently challenged the Metcalfe fairways and greens, not to mention the sand traps, ponds, woods and rough.

All staff seemed to constantly watch my game and appeared to care about my experience OR maybe all those years they were just saying – ‘Dave, you should either take lessons or give up golf!’

When close to retirement 12 years ago I was asked if I was interested in joining the ‘team’. How could I say no? I was finally going to get lessons but not golf lessons! The past 11 seasons have whisked by as have the 35 years of operation.

I do not wish to mention any names as there have been so many great people of all ages who have been a part of my time at Metcalfe. I look forward to my 12^th year as a staff member and 35^th as a golfer.

Metcalfe Golf Social Media Contests - March Winners

With the 2011 Metcalfe Golf Social Media contests off and running we are pleased to announce our March winners.

Facebook Photo Contest

The Facebook Photo contest was a tight race for the month of March, after a tie between Elisa Epps and Melanie Dupuis, the winner had to be decided by virtue of a trivia question. The question was, "what year did the newest 9 holes at Metcalfe Golf and Country Club open?" Do you think you could have gotten the asnwer right, well Elisa did. The March winner is Elisa Epps who submitted this picture (click here). Elisa wins a dozen Callaway HX Diablo golf balls (logo'd with the Metcalfe Golf 35th anniversary logo) and a free 18 hole round of golf. Since it was so close, we are also awarding a second place prize to Melanie for her photo (click here). Melanie wins a free 18 hole round of golf.

My Metcalfe Golf Experience

The March winner is Barry Finlay, who submitted the Tree story, a comedy, or tragedy, about his friend who has a regular date with a tree just off the 18th tee box every time he plays. For his great story Barry wins a dozen Callaway HX Diablo golf balls (logo'd with the Metcalfe Golf 35th anniversary logo) and a free 18 hole round of golf. Additionally, Barry's name will be entered into a draw for the end of season main prize, a dinner experience for 4 at Hickories restaurant.

Congratulations to Melanie, Elisa and Barry. You can pick up your prizes at the Metcalfe Golf pro shop once the course opens.

Course Update

Here is a course update from March 30, we are getting there, but some help from mother nature is still required. I have included some photos of what the courses looks like this week at the bottom.

I have also included a photo of what our updated dinning area looks like, we have made some improvements over the winter in hopes of better service to you the customer.

Current Conditions

Over 75% of the greens have bared off and look very good. Some minor snow mold damage on a very few greens, but it looks like a good spring.
Tees and fairways in tree line area still have snow cover Some snow mould on some fairways and tees, but this grows out quickly and is not a concern
Overall it looks like spring conditions will be quite good as long as temperatures continue to warm

Requirements to Open

Warmer weather to melt the snow and draw the frost out of the ground
As temperatures warm greens will unthaw and begin to green up and eventually start to grow
Once the frost is out of the ground some warm rain will really expedite green up
This process needs to start before the greens will survive the traffic of golf play

Some of the Work to get Course Open

Last fall a dormant fertilizer application was applied to the greens to make sure the plant has nutrients to draw on as they begin to grow
Picking up sticks and debris on greens and tees to they can be cut
Vertical mowing of 18 hole course greens to stimulate growth and speed up ball roll, even with a higher height of cut
Foliar fertilizer to 9 hole course annual blue grass greens which need a bit of help to get growing after winter
Mowing of all the greens a couple times before opening

And let’s not forget putting out the tee signs, markers and of course the Flagstick’s.

Depending on the weather we anticipate all of these things coming together over the next 2 – 3 weeks.

Due to the interest we have received in our Facebook photo contest and our My Metcalfe Experience contest we have decided that we are going to give out the first round of prizes March 31, instead of waiting another full month until April 30.
